1. What does London mean to you?

Home.  I didn’t grow up in London but I’ve lived here for over 20 years now and for me it’s home. My closest friends are here, some of my family, my business and so many memories.  I just love this city. The people, the sights, the atmosphere.  I’m very happy here.

2. What is typical for Greenwich?

A typical day in Greenwich would have to involve a trip to the bustling (1) Greenwich Market. It’s where I started Sweet William and it’s been the launchpad for so many businesses.  You can always find new products and they have a fantastic food court.  You would also want to see the Cutty Sark and go for a walk in Greenwich Park and take in the Observatory – where time begins!

3. Which are your 3 favourite places in London?

  1. St. James Park.
  2. The City – I worked there for years before starting Sweet William and I love the hustle and bustle (2).
  3. Claridges Hotel.  I just love sitting in their bar enjoying a cocktail or two!

4. Which are your 3 favourite places in Great Britain?

  1. Southwold, Suffolk – such a beautiful seaside town with beautiful (and very expensive!) beach huts
  2. Poole Harbour / Sandbanks – such a beautiful part of the world.  I took Cooper (my Golden Retriever) in the summer and he absolutely loved it!
  3. The Isle of Wight – I went there when I was child and I love going back.  It’s like stepping back into 1970s England!

5. What did you want to be, when you were a little girl?

A nanny!!  I was obsessed with babies.

6. What were the biggest milestones in your career?

I designed a range of mugs for Kate and William’s wedding (“I was saving myself for Harry anyway”, “If only I’d gone to St. Andrew’s” etc).  The mugs won a competition for best Royal Wedding memorabilia.  They were picked up by the Evening Standard who did a feature on us and London Tonight – a local news channel – came to film me at my house making the mugs.  From the PR we were inundated (3) with orders and requests from stockists.  It really was the turning point for Sweet William.

7. What or who inspires you most?

William and Cooper!  William was my Black Labrador who sadly passed away (4) last year just a month shy of his 15th birthday.  He was the inspiration and name behind Sweet William and an all-round legend.  Cooper the Golden Retriever strutted (5) into our lives a few months after William passed away and has been healing our hearts ever since and brings so much joy.  The love I have for both of them is off the chart!  And it’s seeing how humans just completely and utterly adore their four legged friends which I love.  Everything we design and create is with this in mind.

8. What was your best nature-experience?

I’m definitely more of a city girl but years ago when I was travelling, we went for the most incredible canoe ride in Knysna, South Africa and then climbed for what felt like hours (!) to reach a beautiful waterfall.  That will take some beating.

9. What does your ideal weekend look like?

Either a long weekend to Ibiza or if I’m in London it would be grabbing a coffee and taking Cooper for a ridiculously long walk around the city discovering new places, cafes and shops.  Then meeting friends for dinner at Exmouth market.

10. What is your favourite British dish?

Hands down… Fish & Chips!!  Sadly I’ve never cooked it in my life so can’t share a recipe but I manage to enjoy a portion at least once a week!

Kelly Stevens / FabFunky

Place of Birth:   London

Profession:        Full time artist

1. Describe your hometown in one sentence.

It’s a traditional seaside town, and Im very lucky as I live just outside of town and within walking distance to a beautiful beach which is great for walking my dogs.

2. What is typical for West Sussex?

The South Downs – a large, beautiful and protected area of countryside which is just up the road from us.

Little villages with ancient cottages.

And then we have Brighton, a very lively city with a bohemian vibe, just 10 miles away.

3. Which are your 3 favourite places in the south of England?

Pretty much anywhere in Devon and Cornwall.  Especially the little traditional fishing ports with the tiny cottages and even tinier winding streets.

4. Which are your 3 favourite places in Great Britain?

Whilst I love living near the sea and the country side I am a city girl at heart, so London and Glasgow have to be at the top of the list.  But also pretty much anywhere on the west coast of Scotland as well.

5. What is the idea and philosophy behind FabFunky?

It is not very serious, but you can tell that from the designs. Nearly everything I do is animal focused, and it is all about bringing out the different personality of animals, humanising (1) them a little, and making people smile.

6. What were the milestones in your career?

I actually only took up art at the age of 45 and had never done anything artistic since I had left school at 16.  So the biggest milestone for me was that after all that time it felt amazing that I could go back to something I loved and actually make a living from it.

7. What or who inspires you most?

My own dogs probably, as I see their character traits and just want to capture them and humanise them further.  But inspiration can strike from the most unexpected sources sometimes as well.

8. What was your best nature-experience?

It was on a boat actually in the Venetian Lagoon.  My husband and I hired a boat and driver for the day, and I distinctly remember speeding across the lagoon on a perfect early autumn day with the sun still warm and shining brightly.  It wasn’t overly nature-inspired, but we were outside, so I think that counts.

9. What does your ideal weekend look like?

Very slow but involving dinner or lunch with friends somewhere Mediterranean.

10. What is your favourite British dish?

Ok, so this might horrify some but it has to be a Banana sandwich.  Mashed up banana in French bread.  I don’t know if that’s very British, but I do love it.

Glossar:

(1) Humanising: Vermenschlichen

  • Llanbadrig – a little church at the most northerly tip of Anglesey where you can see Middle Mouse Island
  • Beaumaris – a pretty little town on the south coast of Anglesey

  • Manchester (of course!)
  • The East Lancashire/West Yorkshire moors, where the hills are wild
  • Loch Awe in Scotland, as it is breathtaking and peaceful.

5. What is the idea and philosophy behind Middle Mouse?

Downton Abbey Violet Crawley

To tell stories and to share a little joy in a turbulent world. I started the company with my Dad in 2018 – he was a cookery and garden writer and I was an illustrator. We invented the Cardlet to blend our two passions together and create something people could send to their loved ones that said more than a card could. His words, my pictures. Unfortunately Dad passed away on his birthday in 2018 and after some soul searching, I decided to keep the business going in his memory.

6. What were the milestones in your career?

I ran a bookshop in Lancashire with my dear friend, Sam Tickner, after graduating university. There we learned about customer service, great products, what sells and how to buy it. We then started a design studio, Firecatcher, which created graphics and illustration for companies such as The BBC, arts festivals, as well as working on several large projects in hospitals, designing artwork for Children’s wards. I still work with Firecatcher today.

A major milestone was overcoming imposter syndrome to exhibit at PG Live in London 2019 – where I launched Middle Mouse for the first time. Our first order was for a bookshop in London – coming full circle!

7. What or who inspires you most?

Stories, literature, nature and good fun. I like the idea that our products inspire, delight, amuse and entertain.

8. What was your best nature-experience?

Helping a baby seal reach its mother as it was stuck on a rock in Llanfairyngornwy, around 2005. We cheered as it reached the open seas!

9. What does your ideal weekend look like?

Brunch with my husband and friends at a quirky (4) café in the city, walking my dog, Pippin (a border collie), in the Lancashire hills, browsing a bookshop or two, then home to cook lasagne. I’d happily spend the rest of the next day reading and drinking tea!

10. What is your favourite British dish?

Welsh Rarebit – every time! It’s basically cheese on toast, but the beer makes all the difference. It’s great with a couple of rashers of bacon (5) too.

Ynys Môn (the Isle of Anglesey) is an island steeped in (1) history and surrounded by beautiful beaches and cliffs with amazing wildlife like the cheeky (2) red squirrel right on our doorstep.

***

What is typically Welsh?

The obvious answer is sheep, daffodils (3) and leeks (4) and of course the Welsh Dragon. But Wales is so much more than that. It is a country proud of its heritage (5) and the Welsh people are passionate (6) about their land and their language.

Here are some great Welsh words:

Cwtch:         A very welsh hug!

Bendigedig:   Wonderful (a word that describes many things here on Anglesey!)

  •  Plenty of food in beeswax wraps (8)!
  •  Mosquito repellant- I always get bitten!

***

How did you get to make beeswax fabric wraps?

I decided a couple of years ago that I needed to reduce my own plastic use. I saw beeswax wraps online as an alternative to clingfilm (9) and decided I could make my own. It wasn’t quite as simple as I thought to get them as good as I wanted them to be. So I did a lot of experimenting and eventually got the recipe right (it’s a top secret recipe now!!). I then started making them for friends and family and the idea grew and grew into the business I have today!

***

  • Chocolate brownies – although they don’t stay in the wrap for long…!
  • Half an avocado

Also. Los geht’s – auf ins nächste Projekt. 2020 ist das Jahr für Neues: Lovely British Somethings – the British Lifestyle Shop geht an den Start!
